Obedience Training or Behaviour Modification — Which Do You Need?

These are not the same thing, and people often book the wrong one.

Obedience training teaches your dog what to do. Sit, stay, recall, walking on a loose leash — a shared vocabulary between you and your dog.

Behaviour modification addresses an underlying emotional problem. Aggression, anxiety, reactivity, fear. The dog is not being disobedient; it is responding to something it cannot cope with.

Plenty of dogs need both, and obedience work often supports the behavioural work. Which one you start with is something we work out during the consultation rather than something you need to diagnose yourself.

The Methods We Use, and the Research Behind Them

Our approach is not a matter of preference. Each of the methods below is grounded in published behavioural research, and all of them prioritise humane, effective handling over force.

LIMA — Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive

LIMA is the guiding principle for how we approach training and behaviour work. It puts positive reinforcement first and treats aversive methods as a last resort rather than a starting point (American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior, 2008).

Positive Reinforcement

Rewarding the behaviour you want makes the dog more likely to repeat it. Research indicates that dogs trained this way are more engaged and more motivated to work with their handler (Schilder & van der Borg, 2004).

Counter-Conditioning

This means pairing something the dog currently finds frightening with something it genuinely likes, so the emotional response changes over time. Treats when a stranger appears, for instance, gradually shift the dog's association with strangers (Herron et al., 2009).

Desensitisation

Controlled exposure to whatever the dog fears, starting at an intensity low enough that the dog stays under threshold, then building slowly. Done properly the fear response reduces rather than being suppressed (Overall, 2013).

Methods that respect how dogs actually learn produce better results than those that don't. Training built on positive reinforcement and consistency is associated with lower anxiety and a stronger relationship between dog and owner (Hiby et al., 2004).

Yes. We work with rescue dogs regularly and use methods built around fearful dogs — building confidence rather than pushing through the fear.

Where do sessions take place?
In your home, in group classes, or both. Most programmes use a mix.
