Expecting Mother’s K9 Preparation
At Sally Said So, we understand that EVERYONE in the household needs to adapt to big changes, including your dog.
Are you an expecting mother? Don’t forget that, having a precious little baby is a life changing event for us, it also is for your furry babies as well! Expecting Mothers K9 Preparation is usually one of the last things soon-to-be-parents think about, but it is equally important. When you welcome a new baby into the home, it affects every aspect of the house. From your daily routines, to how you spend your leisure time, to how much time you spend with Fido, and more.
Our Expecting Mothers k9 Preparation Program
Prior to your new baby, your dog probably received most of the attention in the house. He probably had a set feeding routine and probably knew exactly what to expect…not anymore! These big changes can affect your dog tremendously. It can cause anxiety, aggression, fearfulness, destructive behaviors, and other unwanted behaviors. Sally Said So can help the family and dog adapt to the immense change. Here at Sally Said So Professional Dog Training, it’s our job to show you how to smooth over this transition… before it becomes a problem.
Before the baby comes, plan ahead. It is important to ensure the dog has basic obedience training, which is part of this program. He needs to be able to understand:
- Sit
- Down and stay
- No jumping
- A recall – when you call, he comes
Make sure to produce changes gradually. For example, progressively implement a new walking time, a new place to eat, or sleep, prior to the baby arriving. This is because you don’t want the dog to associate the changes with the baby. You can even push an empty stroller while walking the dog before the baby comes home. Gradually lessen the attention you give the dog before the baby arrives. You can play voices of a baby crying so your dog becomes accustomed to the sounds that the baby will be making. Take it a step further, and introduce baby smells – lotion, powder, baby blanket, etc.

When the baby does finally arrive, the dog could display jealous behaviors and unwanted habits, even towards the baby. The dog may seem confused by this new creature that seems abnormally small, who smells like dirty diapers, and who screams and cries at all hours. Make sure he knows the command to “go to place” and make sure to enforce the good behavior with a reward system.
When the baby makes its first appearance in the home, first greet your dog alone, to prevent him from jumping on the baby. Then allow him to adjust to the smell, sound, and sight of the baby before allowing him to get very close to it. Afterwards, the dog should be controlled with a leash around the baby until he us used to everything. Then he can be let off the leash, but never leave a dog and baby alone, no matter how sure you feel. Make sure to pay attention to the dog, despite the baby’s arrival.
